Why is My Furnace Not Working?
No one likes the feeling of waking up to a cold house – especially if you have a furnace that you expect to be working properly. Your home will feel uncomfortable and on top of that, your home is also at risk for mold, bursting water pipes, and a host of other problems.
Most modern gas furnaces are more efficient but they are also more complex than those from the past. So, we put together a few basic things you can quickly check over on your own if you experience some problems with your furnace:
Check the circuit breakers.
Regardless if you run a furnace that uses natural gas or propane as a source of fuel, some of its components still require electricity to operate. You may start by checking other electrical components in your house as they might not be working, too. You can also check the circuit breaker for your furnace and other HVAC units and make sure that they are turned on. These can usually be found on your main power distribution panel (aka the circuit breaker panel).
Check your thermostat.
When your furnace is not turning on, check the thermostat itself. There are some thermostats that lose their programming and reset if they lose power – even for just a second. Simply check if the thermostat has power and that it is turned on. You should also see to it that the thermostat is in “heating” mode.
Check your blower motor.
If your furnace is not turning on, go to your furnace (if it is accessible) and take a peek in the little plastic window on its side. What you are looking for is a blinking green light. If the light is not blinking green, then you need to call experienced professionals.
Check your air filter.
If you have clogged air filters, it is because it has not been replaced as frequently as it should be. Clogged air filters can cause your furnace to turn off as a safety feature in order to prevent overheating. If your air filters are extremely dirty, then they should be replaced immediately.
Check the condensate pan of your furnace.
Condensate pans, also called drain pans, accumulate water that has been removed from the air that came through your air conditioner or furnace. Drainage pans have mostly been associated with air conditioners but furnaces still produce condensation so they will likely come with a float switch and a condensation pump as well. If it is functioning well, the condensation should drain out or be pumped out via a pump located in the pan or collection reservoir.
