Things You Can Do to Keep Winter Out
Canadian winters can be long and brutal which is why keeping your home toasty and walled off from that cold is so critical. The first step is always a great furnace and HVAC system but there are other means to make sure your home is doing everything it can to keep the warm in and the cold out – while saving a few dollars in the process. Here are the major ways to maximize your home’s efficiency while keeping out any frigid unpleasantness.
Insulation
Keeping heat from escaping is primarily the job of your insulation. On a winter day take a walk around the inside of your home and feel the outer walls. If there’s any sections that feel particularly cold you may need to check to make sure it’s insulated properly. While the walls are important, the major culprit for heat loss tends to be the attic. Take a peak and see what’s up there. Check for moisture to make sure there’s no leaks in the roof and if there are get those fixed. Once it’s dry you can put in new loose fill and put standard fibreglass between the joists.
For newer homes take a good look at the attached garage. Many homebuilders neglect to put in proper insulation between the garage and the home. If the room above the garage has cold spots that’s a dead giveaway that there’s insufficient or missing insulation. Once your home is properly insulated your furnace will not have to work as hard to keep your home warm and that means less energy used and more money saved.
Sealing Drafts
If you’re suddenly hit by a waft of cold air in your normally comfy home it’s almost always due to the windows. On a windy day you should be able to detect any drafts with only your bare hand. Take a trip to the hardware store and pick up any caulk or weather stripping you might need and seal it off. If it’s an issue with the window glass itself you might want to sheet it with a thin layer of plastic to keep the cold out.
Keeping your home thermally efficient will result in big savings and less worry and is well worth the investment.
