Keeping Warm This Fall: Things to Remember

We can feel it in the air – the cold season is fast approaching. Keeping a home warm is not as easy as 1,2,3 especially if the home is older and doesn’t really have very good insulation. Here are some tips on how you can save money while you are kept warm and comfortable all winter long:

Let the sunlight in.

Once the sun rises, you want to capture as much of its heat as possible. Did we mention it’s FREE? Despite the cold weather, the sun remains warm. Before leaving your house for the day, don’t forget to open up those curtains to let the light shine in. If there are parts of your house that don’t get sunlight, there’s no need to open up those curtains. Just do so where the sunlight streams in for a good part of the day.

Draw the curtains at night.

Once the sun goes down, on the other hand, all the heat from the day can be kept from leaving through the windows by closing the drapes. You can also invest in insulated curtains for use during winter. You can also put up temporary curtains, sheets and rugs over doors outside even just at night as you sleep.

Keep doors closed.

If you are frequenting certain rooms in your house, you can close the doors to create a little sauna. Simply leave the doors closed at night and let the heat run like normal. There won’t be as many gaps for heat to escape – you will feel the warmth in the morning.

Utilize space heaters with caution.

If you want to keep individual rooms warm, space heaters will do the trick. The only danger, however, is that they are a high-risk fire hazard. Just ensure that any flammable material is kept at least three feet away. Never leave space heaters on overnight or when you leave your home.

Your oven can help.

Broiling, baking and concocting things can definitely keep your house warmer, especially in those rooms nearest the kitchen.

Add layers to wood floors.

If your wood floors aren’t insulated, they can account for up to 10% of your home’s heat loss. Carpets and rugs keep rooms warmer – use them. They are great for trapping heat than creaky wood floors. During cold seasons, add a rug or a roll of carpet to your floor.

See What Our Customers Are Saying:

by Nancy H. from Oshawa on Twintech Heating and Cooling

Work was performed in a clean and timely manner. The furnace and metal work was performed by the Twintech team (did not require separate contractor to do the metal work). Energy audit was arranged and promised rebates were received. The overall price was very competitive. We have recommended Twintech to several of our friends and family. Awesome job.

Grant and Greg installed a heating and AC system in our new Linwood post and beam home. Post and beam can be challenging structures for running ductwork and their high ceilings and open concept frequently frustrate efforts at balancing air flow and controlling temperatures. But these guys did it and did it right the first time. Even the building inspector was impressed with what he saw. More importantly, the boys brought a high degree of trust and integrity to the job. Something in short supply these days.

I have used Twintech many times over the years. They always arrive quickly and get the issue fixed. The most recent incident was when my air conditioner broke last week I called Greg at 11:30am and he was at my home by 2:30pm he had the unit fixed by 3:30pm. Twintech are very reliable and honest and they are experts in the field. I have already recommended them to many of my friends. I would not use anyone but them for my heating and air conditioning issues.

I would highly recommend these guys, professional, fast and competitive pricing. I moved into this place with no working AC unit with a 8 month baby, he was able to come with in a week to fix even in the busy summer days. He really values his customers , I am already recommending to my neighbors.

Very impressed they arrive to quote even though I had forgotten to call them back to confirm date & time. They showed the day before installation to deliver the unit. Returned the next day as promised at 9am. Project was completed in a professional manner. They even fixed a few things that they noticed were not installed correctly, or to code by previous heating & air contractors we had at our residence before. Would recommend this company to everyone!

Greg removed old oil furnace and oil tank from basement relocated new Napoleon propane furnace to allow duct work to be rerouted to a much more suitable location. Moved air conditioner to the new furnace. Dave recommended two available grants to assist with cost. They kept to their original quoted price which was substantially lower than a competitors for the same furnace and work. They completed the work as stated when stated and left the area clean and tidy. We are very pleased with the outcome.
