How Does a Ductless Heat Pump Work?

A ductless heat pump, also known as a mini-split system, is a type of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system that provides both heating and cooling to a building without the need for traditional ductwork. Here's a basic overview of how a ductless heat pump works:

  1. Components:

    • Outdoor Unit (Condenser): This unit is installed outside the building and contains the compressor, condenser coil, and a fan. It is responsible for releasing or absorbing heat, depending on whether the system is in cooling or heating mode.
    • Indoor Units (Evaporators): These units are installed inside the building and are responsible for distributing conditioned air. Each indoor unit is connected to the outdoor unit by refrigerant lines.
  2. Refrigeration Cycle:

    • Cooling Mode:

      • The refrigerant in the system absorbs heat from the indoor air through the indoor unit's evaporator coil.
      • The absorbed heat is then transported to the outdoor unit.
      • In the outdoor unit, the compressor increases the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant.
      • The refrigerant releases the absorbed heat to the outdoor air through the condenser coil and the fan.
    • Heating Mode:

      • The refrigerant absorbs heat from the outdoor air in cold weather.
      • The compressor increases the temperature of the refrigerant.
      • The heated refrigerant is then circulated to the indoor units.
      • In the indoor units, the refrigerant releases heat to the indoor air through the evaporator coil.
  3. Distribution of Conditioned Air:

    • Each indoor unit is equipped with a fan that distributes the conditioned air within the specific zone it serves.
    • Ductless systems can have multiple indoor units connected to a single outdoor unit, allowing for zoned heating and cooling. This means different rooms or areas can be conditioned independently.
  4. Zoning and Individual Control:

    • One of the advantages of ductless heat pumps is the ability to create multiple zones with individual temperature controls. Each indoor unit can be controlled independently, allowing for personalized comfort and energy efficiency.
  5. Energy Efficiency:

    • Ductless systems are often more energy-efficient than traditional HVAC systems because they don't experience the energy losses associated with ductwork. They can also be more efficient in mild climates.

In summary, a ductless heat pump works by transferring heat between indoor and outdoor units through a refrigeration cycle, providing both heating and cooling. The absence of ducts and the ability to create independent zones make these systems versatile and energy-efficient.

I had a really great experience with these guys. The salesman Bob was clearly very knowledgeable about everything to do with heating and cooling a home, spent a lot of time with us going over the details of the job, never rushed us and came back after the install to make sure we were happy. The installation crew was excellent, they covered the floors all the way from outside down to the basement furnace room, kept the place clean, got the work done on time and we’re very friendly. I’ve got 15 years in the contracting/ construction industry and these guys are one of the most professional company’s I’ve dealt with. Great company!

Had great service and clean-up was good. Was happy with my salesman. They were very friendly and helpful. I needed a new furnace as our was over 20 years old. The furnace and air-conditioner work great and they are very quiet. I am very pleased with the service and product I received.

Reviews for Twintech were good, and they did not disappoint. After an initial visit to discuss the suitable AC unit for replacement, an installation date was available in just a couple of days, and everything was installed without a hitch. Highly recommended

Thank you for a job well done.

My old water heater quit on me. I called TwinTech. In less than 4 days, I had my new water heater installed and the old one taken away. The whole process was quick, easy, pleasant, and well done. This is the third time I've dealt with TwinTech and I've been satisfied each time.

I had them replace my furnace last year. When it came time for the air conditioner this year, I did not hesitate to call Twintech again. I will also have them perform regular maintenance on them.

We required a new HVAC replacement after running the old
system for 18 years.
Dave understood our requirements and gave us a quote that
covered all the necessary items.
Installation was fast and very tidy. Everything works as
it should. Our thanks to Greg, Mitch and others for their
excellent work. Recommend this family owned business to
anyone else, considering HVAC or other work.

I needed a new furnace and A/C to replace my 21 yr. old units, and went to the internet to view potential companies in May, I received 3 quotes,
and chose Twintech based on their salesman Dave who was very detailed and covered off everything on what Twintech was all about,
an extremely dedicated company with so many years of experience, and after reading the on line reviews I was sold on Twintech, who did not disappoint as the installation team were top notch with Greg leading,
I would highly recommend this company without any doubts, in my books they are first class all the way. Our new Amana furnace and A/C are working perfectly !
