All AC units eventually give their owners some trouble as regular use wears them down. Here we’ll go through steps to prolong the life of your AC, how to know when you should get it repaired and when you should finally replace your air conditioner!
To keep your AC happy for as long as possible, be sure to regularly maintain it. This first and foremost means regularly changing or cleaning the filters to ensure dirt and dust aren’t clogging the system or spreading throughout your duct system. Next, make sure the outdoor part of the unit is free of leaves, dirt and branches. These can also cause air flow problems, forcing your AC to strain itself. The last simple troubleshooting thing you can perform is if your AC unit isn’t responding or turning on. Turn the unit off and check the fuse box and reset the circuit.
If you’ve done all of the maintenance steps but you’re still having trouble with your AC, this is likely the time to call your HVAC repair technician. If the issue seems bad, you may seem tempted to simply replace it. But:
- If the cost of repairs is less than one-third the cost of replacing it
- If the unit is less than 10 years old
- If the unit is still under warranty (such as the No Hassle Replacement Plan)
Then don’t worry about replacing the unit! A repair will be more cost effective and keep your unit running smoothly in the future!

The next day he came to the house to review my needs and give me a price for a new system. Price quoted was less than I expected and the installation was completed the following day. We are very happy to recommend this company to everyone. Our furnace broke down on Sunday morning. We phoned them and before noon Grant the owner showed up. He worked on the furnace for about a hour not wanting to give up to fix the problem. The furnace was 17 years old. I was the one talking about replacing it. End result was the next day it was all done. On the Sunday Bob came over with heaters to warm up the house. We decided to replace the water heater at the same time. TwinTech is an excellent and honest company! I called them for a second opinion after being told by another company that I needed to replace my furnace. Turns out this was not the case at all!
