What is the Difference Between a Heat Pump and a Furnace?
When the weather becomes colder, we rely on our home’s heating units to keep us warm during the fall and winter seasons, whether it be a furnace or a heat pump. But, what is the difference between the two? And which one would work best for you?
Most people know that a furnace generates heat by burning fuel, such as oil or natural gas and some are even powered by electricity. A heat pump does not require fuel to work, instead, it uses electricity and a refrigerant to transfer heat from the outdoor air to the inside. When in heat mode, it acts as a reverse air conditioner. And in the summertime, it also doubles as an air conditioner.
When it comes to efficiency, newer furnace models have a rate of 98% heat inside, with only 2% of heat escaping through vents. Heat pumps are considered more fuel-efficient because they only use one unit of electricity to move three units of heat energy. However, performance slows as it starts to get colder outside and they require a backup heat source to keep the house warm.
What is the best choice when it comes to heating your home? A heat pump or furnace? A traditional gas furnace can work for homeowners who already have access to natural gas. While a heat pump may be the better choice if you have no gas lines installed in your home, you can also save money on an air conditioning unit since it can act as both units.
