How to Prepare Your Heat Pump for Warmer Weather

As temperatures begin to rise across Ontario, your heat pump is about to shift from heating your home to keeping it cool and comfortable.
This seasonal transition is a critical time for homeowners—because how well your system performs in summer depends heavily on how you prepare it in spring.
Taking a few simple steps now can improve efficiency, prevent breakdowns, and extend the lifespan of your system.
Here’s how to properly prepare your heat pump for warmer weather.
🌸 Why Spring Preparation Matters
Your heat pump has likely been working hard all winter.
Over time, dust, debris, and wear can impact performance.
If these issues aren’t addressed before cooling season begins, your system may: Struggle to maintain comfortable temperatures Use more energy than necessary Experience unexpected breakdowns Circulate dust and allergens throughout your home
Spring preparation ensures your system is clean, efficient, and ready for increased demand.
🔧 1.
Replace or Clean Your Air Filter
Your air filter plays a major role in both system performance and indoor air quality.
After a long winter, filters are often clogged with: Dust Pet dander Debris
A dirty filter restricts airflow, forcing your heat pump to work harder than it should.
What to do: Replace disposable filters Clean reusable filters Consider upgrading to a higher-efficiency filter for better air quality 🌬️ 2.
Clean Around the Outdoor Unit
Your outdoor unit is exposed to the elements year-round, and winter can leave behind a surprising amount of debris.
Common buildup includes: Leaves and twigs Dirt and mud Ice damage residue
This buildup restricts airflow and reduces efficiency.
What to do: Clear at least 2 feet of space around the unit Gently remove visible debris Check for any signs of physical damage 💧 3.
Check for Moisture and Drainage Issues
As your system begins cooling, it will also remove moisture from the air.
That moisture needs somewhere to go.
If your condensate drain is clogged or blocked, it can lead to: Water leaks Mold growth System shutdowns
What to do: Inspect the drain line for blockages Look for signs of standing water Ensure proper drainage away from your home ⚙️ 4.
Test Your System in Cooling Mode
Before the first hot day hits, it’s a good idea to test your heat pump.
Switch your system to cooling mode and check for: Cool air coming from vents Normal airflow Unusual noises or smells
Catching problems early can save you from discomfort—and costly emergency repairs—later on.
🧹 5.
Inspect Indoor Vents and Airflow
Blocked or dirty vents can reduce your system’s effectiveness and lead to uneven cooling.
What to do: Ensure all vents are open and unobstructed Vacuum dust from vent covers Check for weak airflow in certain rooms
Proper airflow helps your heat pump maintain consistent temperatures throughout your home.
🔍 6.
Schedule a Professional Heat Pump Tune-Up
While there’s a lot you can do yourself, a professional inspection is one of the most important steps in spring preparation.
A qualified technician can: Clean coils and internal components Check refrigerant levels Inspect electrical connections Test system efficiency and performance
This ensures your system is operating at peak performance before summer demand begins.
🌡️ 7.
Optimize Your Thermostat Settings
Spring is also a great time to adjust your thermostat for cooling efficiency.
Tips: Set a consistent, comfortable temperature Avoid drastic temperature changes Consider upgrading to a smart thermostat for better control
Small adjustments can lead to noticeable energy savings over time.
⚠️ Signs Your Heat Pump Isn’t Ready for Summer
If you notice any of the following, your system may need attention: Weak or inconsistent airflow Strange noises (buzzing, rattling, or grinding) Higher-than-normal energy bills Uneven cooling throughout your home System turning on and off frequently
Addressing these issues early can prevent bigger problems during peak season.
🌱 The Benefits of Preparing Early
Getting ahead of the season offers several advantages: Lower energy costs Improved indoor comfort Better air quality Reduced risk of breakdowns Longer system lifespan
Spring is also a less busy time for HVAC service, making it easier to schedule maintenance.

On one of the coldest days of winter, our furnace stopped working. Our regular furnace company came and told us we had a CO2 leak and shut us off. Their quote for a new furnace was way too high and they couldn't even install it on the same day. TwinTech was recommended to us by a friend. We called and spoke to Dave who was very nice and knowledgeable. Grant showed up a short time later and a new furnace was installed the same day with no troubles at all. Best of all, we received a higher-end furnace than what was offered by our previous company and at a cheaper price. I would recommend TwinTech with no hesitation at all.
I installed a new furnace and Air conditioner with them. The installation is of high quality and according to standards. The guys are professional and reasonably priced.. I highly recommend them.
Had new furnace installed and ran into some difficulties but the contractor responded in a timely and efficient manner - after further service calls were made, a reasonable resolution was found.
The work was done quickly efficiently neatly and professionally. Pleased with the service, information, product, and the company.
Great sales member named Dave came in told us some amazing items and how they would be priced installed an all. We couldnt believe it! The next day the ac was installed, that day one employee named Greg told us that our furnace was working way to hard and was causing us to use way too much gas. So two days later they came in an installed a new furnace!
Installation was done quickly and professionally. The new furnace is quiet and provides even heat.
They removed and discarded old furnace. Installed new furnace. Installed air intake pipe, that had never been installed by builder, no charge. Replaced loose hose on floor with hard pipe and rerouted it to drain, no charge. Almost 33% cheaper then quote from Enercare, which was the company we dealt with and had insurance with for 8 years. No yearly fee for cleaning/insurance, saves 300 a year. Courteous, professional, fast, and friendly. My wife and I have been recommending them to everyone we know and meet, and will continue to do so. Thanks for everything, Twintech!!!
This company was great to deal with. Our furnace went down and they installed a new furnace the next day with a lot of professionalism!
Finally! An honest company with highly knowledgeable and informative staff. Had a furnace service and found multiply errors in our system from an amateur installer. Very fair price to correct problems and will definitely use again.
Had to replace the heating & a/c unit in a condo apartment dwelling. this company recommended by the property manager and president of the condo building. found their workmanship and attention to details very good and very thorough. were able to resolve small problems and situations and happy to feel the heat in my unit. it's pricey, but happy was done by a very professional service. thank you.

We are very happy to recommend this company to everyone. Our furnace broke down on Sunday morning. We phoned them and before noon Grant the owner showed up. He worked on the furnace for about a hour not wanting to give up to fix the problem. The furnace was 17 years old. I was the one talking about replacing it. End result was the next day it was all done. On the Sunday Bob came over with heaters to warm up the house. We decided to replace the water heater at the same time. Thanks Grant for the excellent work. Thumbs up.
Right on time. Explained how to work the HRV in a different way so the house would not be so dry. Changed my whole house water filter for me as well. Friendly, helpful, caring service!
Very pleased with the professional service that TwinTech Heating and Cooling provided in replacing my furnace. I got several quotes from different service providers. Their price was excellent and they explained the features very well. We are very glad we went with TwinTech and highly recommend their services.
We were new homeowners in need of a second opinion. TwinTech Heating & Cooling were Amazing and professional. Very knowledgeable and great service all around. Recommend to anyone looking for honest and reliable services. Treated with respect and care. Thank you Greg, Mitch and Bob!
TwinTech is an excellent and honest company! I called them for a second opinion after being told by another company that I needed to replace my furnace. Turns out this was not the case at all! I did not need a new furnace. TwinTech did not push to make an unnecessary sale and saved me from a huge expense. Bob and Mitch were extremely professional and above all honest! I definitely recommend TwinTech!
