Is My Home Eligible for an Air Source Heat Pump?

With rising energy costs and a growing focus on efficiency, more Ontario homeowners are considering switching to an air source heat pump.

But one of the most common questions we hear is:

“Is my home actually eligible for one?”

The good news? Most homes can use an air source heat pump—but the details matter.

Your home’s size, insulation, existing system, and layout all play a role in determining the best setup.

Let’s walk through what eligibility really means and how to tell if your home is a good fit.

🌬️ What Is an Air Source Heat Pump?

An air source heat pump transfers heat between your home and the outside air.

In winter: it pulls heat from outside and brings it indoors In summer: it removes heat from inside and pushes it outdoors

Modern cold-climate heat pumps are designed to work efficiently even during Ontario’s colder months, making them a practical option for year-round comfort.

✅ The Short Answer: Most Homes Qualify

In general, most homes in Ontario are eligible for an air source heat pump—but the type of system and installation approach may vary.

Even if your home is: Older Larger Not currently using central air

…there are usually solutions available.

🏠 Key Factors That Determine Eligibility 1.

Your Home’s Insulation and Air Sealing

A well-insulated home is the ideal environment for a heat pump.

If your home has: Poor insulation Drafty windows and doors Air leaks

…the system will have to work harder to maintain temperature.

Good news: Even if your insulation isn’t perfect, you can still install a heat pump—but improving insulation will boost performance and savings.

2.

Your Existing Heating System

Your current setup plays a big role in how a heat pump is installed.

Common scenarios include: Forced air (furnace): A ducted heat pump can often integrate with existing ductwork.

Boiler or baseboard heating: A ductless (mini-split) system may be a better fit.

No central system: Ductless systems are ideal for homes without ducts.

3.

Electrical Capacity

Heat pumps run on electricity, so your home’s electrical system needs to support the unit.

In some cases: An electrical panel upgrade may be required Additional circuits may need to be installed

This is a common upgrade and usually straightforward for professionals.

4.

Outdoor Space for Installation

Air source heat pumps require an outdoor unit.

You’ll need: Adequate space around the unit Proper airflow clearance A suitable mounting location (ground or wall-mounted)

Most properties have enough room, but placement should be carefully planned.

5.

Home Size and Layout

Every home is different, and system sizing is critical.

Factors include: Square footage Ceiling height Number of floors Room layout

A properly sized system ensures: Even heating and cooling Maximum efficiency Lower energy costs 6.

Ontario Climate Considerations

Ontario’s climate includes cold winters—but modern heat pumps are built for it.

Cold-climate air source heat pumps: Operate efficiently in low temperatures Maintain performance during winter months Can be paired with backup heating if needed

This makes them a reliable option for most homes in the region.

⚠️ Situations Where Extra Planning Is Needed

While most homes are eligible, some require additional considerations: Older homes with minimal insulation Homes with outdated electrical systems Complex layouts that need multiple indoor units Extremely large homes requiring multi-zone systems

These don’t disqualify your home—they just mean the installation needs to be tailored carefully.

💸 What About Rebates and Incentives?

Many Ontario homeowners may qualify for rebates or incentives when installing a heat pump.

Eligibility often depends on: The type of system installed Energy efficiency ratings Home energy assessments

Since programs change over time, it’s best to check current offerings or work with a professional who stays up to date.

🔍 How to Know for Sure

The only way to determine true eligibility is with a professional assessment.

A qualified HVAC technician will evaluate: Your home’s structure and insulation Existing heating system Electrical capacity Heating and cooling needs

This ensures you get the right system for your home—not just a one-size-fits-all solution.

🌱 Benefits of Installing a Heat Pump

If your home is eligible, the advantages are significant: Lower energy costs (especially compared to traditional systems) Year-round heating and cooling Improved energy efficiency Reduced environmental impact Increased home value 🏡 Final Thoughts

So, is your home eligible for an air source heat pump?

In most cases, yes.

The key is choosing the right system and ensuring it’s installed properly for your specific home.

Even if your home has challenges, there are usually solutions that make a heat pump a smart and worthwhile investment.

At Twintech Heating & Cooling, we help Ontario homeowners determine the best heat pump solutions for their homes.

If you’re considering making the switch, a professional assessment can give you clear answers—and help you move forward with confidence.

The crew arrived early morning on May 11th, 2018 and worked through till late afternoon non-stop. They were very friendly, very professional, their expertise was excellent, their workmanship outstanding and the installation was completed in a timely and efficient manner. We were completely satisfied and happy with the quality of the work.

I had cold and hot spots all over my 70 yr old home. My furnace is quite new and Greg optimized the fan and furnace. The original installer just took it out of the box with factory settings and installed it- basically running at 50% of capacity. Greg also routed heat into my laundry room, yeah - so now I can renovate laundry room - thanks Greg. He is honest, professional and knowledgeable. I will be calling him back in the spring to optimize my AC as well.

Wonderful from beginning to end. I tend to fret and worry about home improvements but the excellent team at TwinTech put my mind as ease. They listen, they are patient and best of all ... the work they did is amazing! I chose the Goodman 80K BTU 2 stage furnace and the matching Goodman air conditioner. Greg, Grant and Poitr "Peter" arrived on time, took great care, explained everything to me and they answered all of my questions. They carefully adjusted the factory settings to optimize the furnace for my house and they also checked the duct work in the basement. Dave, the Sales Manager, came by to say "hello" and to see if I was happy. YES, I am happy with the work! The furnace is very quiet. I have it running on low just to circulate the air in the house and it's so much quieter than my old furnace. When I need new duct work for an upcoming basement renovation TwinTech will be my first choice. I highly recommend TwinTech. PS. They were even nice to my dogs.

Greg was prompt on the scheduled day of installation and the work was done well within the time estimated beforehand. Installation was neat and the equipment and scope of work was as specified in the quote. One item I must point out is that we were faced with a "No Heat" situation the day before the scheduled installation and Greg came out to address it free of charge. Not only that, but he also corrected an installation fault with our smart thermostat that was not part of the original job, again free of charge.

Greg came by to do a routine furnace checkup. He was very knowledgeable and professional, letting me know what's being checked/adjusted and giving me tips to ensure everything runs smooth. Very honest and upfront about what's working fine vs. what may need to be fixed/replaced. He didn't attempt to up sell anything that wasn't necessary. I'm glad to have finally found someone I can trust and rely on for all my HVAC needs - furnace, A/C, and hot water tank.

by Paul M. from Toronto on Twintech Heating and Cooling

I'm very happy with the work that was done. Everyone from salesperson to the installers were friendly and professional. They were on time and cleaned up the job site after it was installed. They also answered all my follow up questions promptly. I wouldn't hesitate to work with them or recommend them again.

We are very happy to recommend this company to everyone. Our furnace broke down on Sunday morning. We phoned them and before noon Grant the owner showed up. He worked on the furnace for about a hour not wanting to give up to fix the problem. The furnace was 17 years old. I was the one talking about replacing it. End result was the next day it was all done. On the Sunday Bob came over with heaters to warm up the house. We decided to replace the water heater at the same time. Thanks Grant for the excellent work. Thumbs up.

by Linda on Twintech Heating and Cooling

Right on time. Explained how to work the HRV in a different way so the house would not be so dry. Changed my whole house water filter for me as well. Friendly, helpful, caring service!

by Ruth on Twintech Heating and Cooling

TwinTech is an excellent and honest company! I called them for a second opinion after being told by another company that I needed to replace my furnace. Turns out this was not the case at all! I did not need a new furnace. TwinTech did not push to make an unnecessary sale and saved me from a huge expense. Bob and Mitch were extremely professional and above all honest! I definitely recommend TwinTech!
