Looking to buy a house and convert to heat pumps in New England What should I be looking for?

Apologies if there's a better sub to ask this. As in the title, I'm in the market for a house in the NE US, and I'd like to fully switch to heat pumps for heating and cooling once purchased. Is there anything specifically in the house I should be looking for? I assume modern double pane windows and good insulation. What about the existing heating system? Would existing ducts save me any money in the conversion? If a house has recent construction and forced air with a propane/natural gas furnace, would I even be saving money in the long run? For reference I'm looking for a 2-3 bedroom with square footage in the teens.

Question from user craptrap at heatpumps at reddit.com.

Answer:

Age and condition of the house: If the house is older, it may not be as well insulated, which can affect the efficiency of your heat pump system. Make sure to check for any signs of wear and tear, such as drafts or leaks, that could negatively impact your energy savings.

Type of heat pump: There are several types of heat pumps available, including air-source and ground-source. Air-source heat pumps are the most common type and are typically more affordable. However, ground-source heat pumps are more efficient and can save you more money in the long run.

Size of the heat pump: The size of the heat pump you need will depend on the size of your home and your heating and cooling needs. Make sure to work with a qualified HVAC professional to determine the appropriate size of heat pump for your home.

Location of the heat pump: If you opt for an air-source heat pump, make sure to choose a location that is protected from the elements and has adequate airflow. For ground-source heat pumps, you will need enough space for the outdoor unit and the ground loops.

Insulation and sealing: To ensure that your heat pump system operates efficiently, it's important to have good insulation and sealing in your home. This will prevent heat loss and help to maintain a consistent temperature inside your home.

Energy efficiency: When purchasing a heat pump system, look for models with high SEER and HSPF ratings. These ratings indicate the energy efficiency of the system and can help you save money on your energy bills.

By considering these factors, you can find a house that is suitable for a heat pump conversion and ensure that your heat pump system operates efficiently for years to come.

My Fiancé and I have relied on Twintech Heating and Cooling now for the better part of the last 10 years. In that time, Greg has installed a furnace, an air conditioner, and a heat-pump at our residence in Toronto. In each instance Greg and his team were a pleasure to deal with. They were courteous and professional throughout the whole process and the quality of their work is first rate. Our experiences have always been extremely positive and we have referred his services numerous times to our friends and family. Without hesitation, I would recommend Greg and TwinTech Heating and Cooling to anyone looking to service or replace their existing heat/AC equipment
