AC compressor running but fan not spinning

Hello everyone,

It's about AC season where I live and I did a trial run of the AC to check everything is working ok and the compressor is running but not the fan in the AC unit outside.

2 or 3 years ago this happened and giving the fan a push helped it running (the push was needed occasionally, most of the time the fan was running on its own).

It happened again a year ago and decided to investigate more and I ended up installing a new capacitor.

After that, it ran all season without any issues.

This year it happened again, I haven't tried much but thinking if the capacitor got discharged, it is draining, or do I definitely need a major overhaul/new AC?

Any help and pointers are appreciated.

I'm handy and can do most work on my own unless it requires special tools or considerable repairs.

Answer:

If the compressor is running but the fan is not, it could be due to a fault in the capacitor, motor, or wiring.

Based on your previous experience, it's possible that the capacitor is faulty again and needs to be replaced.

Capacitors can discharge over time, and if it is not holding the charge properly, it can cause the fan motor to fail.

Before replacing the capacitor, make sure to turn off the power to the unit and discharge the capacitor by shorting the terminals with an insulated screwdriver.

Then, remove the capacitor and test it with a multimeter to check its capacitance and voltage rating.

If it's not within the specified range, you may need to replace it.

If the capacitor is fine, then you may need to check the wiring and the motor.

Check if the motor is receiving power and if there is continuity between the motor windings.

If there is no power, check the wiring connections and fuses.

If there is no continuity, then the motor may need to be replaced.

In any case, it's worth investigating the issue before considering a major overhaul or replacing the AC unit.

However, if you are not comfortable working with electricity or do not have the necessary tools, it's best to call a professional to diagnose and fix the issue.
