Learning how to maintain and clean your filters is an important and necessary process in taking care of your HVAC units.
Filters are used to prevent dust, hair and other particles from clogging the fan, while also maintaining the air quality in your home.
Understanding your filters and how to properly maintain them is a great way to keep your HVAC appliances in tip-top shape.
Here are some facts about filters and tips on replacing them:Filter Ratings
All furnace filters have a minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV).
You can find these ratings listed on your furnace filters.
Keeping your MERV rating from 8-11 is ideal, anything higher could cause your furnace to overwork itself.
If you are not sure what rating works best for your furnace, check in with your local HVAC expert.
Filter Types
Disposable pleated filters are the most common type, and prices range depending on the brand, size, and rating.
These filters should be checked monthly for blockages and replaced every 90 days for optimal performance.
Disposable fiberglass filters are the cheapest on the market and have a lower rating than pleated filters.
Because these filters have a lower rating, they need to be checked and changed more often than pleated filters.
Washable filters can be cleaned and reused.
This type of filter is made from aluminum or plastic, and it can last up to five years if maintained every 90 days.
While these filters are considered to be more efficient and durable than disposable filters, they can be quite costly.
When replacing your filters, you need to consider depth, height, and length.
The most common thickness is one inch, while four inches is a popular size for larger models.
To change your filter, open the compartment door located between the air intake and the furnace, slide the old filter out and replace it with the new one, arrow side facing the furnace side.

When our old oil furnace finally broke down we decided it was time to finally convert to natural gas and finally install central air conditioning at the same time. A few days after install the unit didnt seem to be working, user error, but within minutes of contacting them..on a Saturday.. a tech was on the phone troubleshooting with us. During the hottest week in the summer our old A/C decided to call it quits. I called Twintech Heating & Cooling after receiving a referral from a family member; came highly rated for being an honest, family-run business, who appreciates their customers. Dave was able to accommodate my hectic schedule and book a late evening appointment to walk through the specifics. Greg and Mitch arrived exactly on time a few days later, were very polite and friendly, and within a couple of hours had a new unit up and running. I also received a follow-up call to ensure we were happy with the Amana.
