Honeywell Thermostat Question

Unfamiliar with hvac and would like to ask before doing anything.
It's gettin late so can't call anyone.
Have a standard Honeywell thermostat that typically does not use batteries to be powered.
Noticed it was shut off this evening.
I pulled it off and installed batteries to the unit without placing it back on the housing and the thermostat worked.
We have had a pretty significant amount of rain all day and the hvac has seemed to work normally all day.
Is it ok to place this back on the housing with the batteries in place, or would this cause problems? - since there is normally central wiring that powers it.
Any idea what could be wrong?

It's unusual for a standard Honeywell thermostat to require batteries if it's wired to a central HVAC system, as they usually draw power from the HVAC system itself. However, if you found that installing batteries allowed the thermostat to work, it's possible that there may be an issue with the power supply from the HVAC system, or there may be a specific setting or configuration that requires batteries.

My old furnace had finally broken down for the last time when contacted twintech to have a new furnace installed They were prompt, knowledgeable and very reasonably priced. They did such a great job i tell all my friends and family about this company.
