Is My AC Unit Overworked?

If you're concerned that your AC unit might be overworked, there are several signs and factors you can consider to determine if it’s operating beyond its capacity or needs maintenance. Here’s a detailed guide to help you assess the situation:

Signs Your AC Unit May Be Overworked

  1. Constant Running:

    • If your AC unit runs continuously without cycling off, it could be a sign that it’s struggling to maintain the set temperature.
  2. Inadequate Cooling:

    • If your home isn’t cooling to the set temperature or if there are hot spots in certain areas, your AC might be overworked.
  3. High Energy Bills:

    • A sudden spike in your energy bills without a corresponding increase in usage can indicate that your AC is working harder than usual.
  4. Frequent Breakdowns:

    • If your AC unit requires frequent repairs or if parts are consistently wearing out, it might be overworking.
  5. Strange Noises:

    • Unusual sounds such as grinding, squealing, or rattling can indicate that the AC unit is under strain.
  6. Ice Buildup:

    • Ice on the evaporator coils or refrigerant lines can be a sign that the unit is overworking and not operating efficiently.
  7. Excessive Humidity:

    • An overworked AC might not dehumidify the air effectively, leading to higher indoor humidity levels.

Potential Causes of Overworking

  1. Incorrect Sizing:

    • An AC unit that is too small for the space it’s cooling will have to work harder to maintain the desired temperature.
  2. Dirty Filters:

    • Clogged filters reduce airflow, making the unit work harder to push air through the system.
  3. Blocked Vents:

    • Blocked or closed vents can restrict airflow and force the AC to work harder.
  4. Dirty Coils:

    • Dirt and debris on the evaporator or condenser coils can reduce efficiency and cause the unit to overwork.
  5. Low Refrigerant Levels:

    • Insufficient refrigerant can reduce cooling efficiency, causing the unit to run longer.
  6. Poor Insulation:

    • Homes with poor insulation lose cool air quickly, making the AC unit work harder to maintain the set temperature.
  7. Thermostat Issues:

    • A malfunctioning thermostat can cause the AC unit to run excessively.

Steps to Address an Overworked AC Unit

  1. Regular Maintenance:

    • Schedule annual maintenance to ensure the unit is clean and functioning properly.
  2. Clean or Replace Filters:

    • Check and replace filters regularly, typically every 1-3 months, depending on usage and filter type.
  3. Inspect and Clean Coils:

    • Clean the evaporator and condenser coils to improve efficiency.
  4. Check Refrigerant Levels:

    • Have a professional check and refill refrigerant if necessary.
  5. Unblock Vents:

    • Ensure all vents are open and unblocked by furniture or other objects.
  6. Improve Home Insulation:

    • Improve insulation in your home to reduce the workload on your AC unit.
  7. Upgrade Thermostat:

    • Consider upgrading to a programmable or smart thermostat for better control over cooling cycles.

All winter I have had an issue with very little heat reaching the 2nd floor of our home. After this past winter ended I decided to look into this. I found Twintech Heating and Cooling on line and started the process. After explaining my problem I had a call form Twintech and the tech came out and walked through things with me. The problem was the heating vent pipe had been dropped down in size by someone years ago causing little heat reaching the 2nd floor. Further into checking out the older furnace and AC they found a few things not properly installed by the last install of the old furnace and also that the AC was on it's last legs. I asked for a quote and waited a few days and we decided to go ahead with Twintech. They called a few days before to set up an installation time and date. The day of the install the guys were a half hour early which was a plus. The day of the install was great, the guys worked away removing the old furnace and AC.After which they installed the new furnace and AC. After they cleaned up the basement with all their tools and scrap metal etc. they came back inside to walk thru what they did. They also tested both the furnace and cooling systems to make sure everything worked and I the customer was happy. I now have heat on the 2nd floor for next winter. The guys from Twin tech were very professional. Their work habits and knowledge of the job was excellent. Their workmanship was just excellent, it was just up there with my standards as a homeowner. I am very pleased to have chosen Twintech for my new furnace and AC.. If I had to rate this experience with Twintech this company is a 10 in my books.Product, workmanship and customer care says it all.
