The Essential Guide to Air Conditioner Home Ownership

Owning an air conditioner is not just about enjoying cool, comfortable air during the sweltering summer months—it's about ensuring your unit runs efficiently, lasts longer, and provides value for your investment. Whether you're a new homeowner or you've had an AC unit for years, understanding the essentials of air conditioner home ownership is crucial. In this guide, we’ll cover the key aspects you need to consider to keep your air conditioning system in top shape.

1. Choosing the Right Air Conditioner for Your Home

The journey of air conditioner ownership starts with selecting the right unit. When choosing an AC system, consider the following:

  • Size and Capacity: An undersized unit will struggle to cool your home, leading to higher energy bills and faster wear and tear. On the other hand, an oversized unit may cool too quickly without properly dehumidifying the air. Ensure your unit is correctly sized for your home’s square footage and layout.

  • Energy Efficiency: Look for units with a high SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy-efficient the unit, which means lower energy bills in the long run.

  • Type of AC System: Central air conditioning systems, ductless mini-splits, and window units each have their pros and cons. Choose the one that fits your home's needs, budget, and existing infrastructure.

2. Regular Maintenance is Key

Routine maintenance is the backbone of air conditioner home ownership. Regular maintenance not only extends the lifespan of your unit but also ensures it runs efficiently. Here are the main tasks you should prioritize:

  • Filter Replacement: Replace or clean your air filters every 1-3 months, depending on usage. Clogged filters reduce efficiency and strain the system.

  • Annual Professional Tune-Up: Schedule a professional HVAC technician to inspect and tune up your system once a year. They’ll check refrigerant levels, clean coils, and ensure all components are working correctly.

  • Clean the Coils and Fins: Dirt and debris can accumulate on the condenser coils and fins, reducing efficiency. Gently clean these parts with a soft brush or a vacuum with a brush attachment.

3. Understanding Your Thermostat

Your thermostat plays a vital role in how your air conditioner operates. To maximize efficiency:

  • Set It to the Right Temperature: The U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat to 78°F when you're home and higher when you're away. This helps reduce energy consumption without sacrificing comfort.

  • Utilize Programmable Thermostats: Invest in a programmable or smart thermostat that can automatically adjust the temperature based on your schedule. This feature can significantly reduce your energy bills.

  • Regularly Calibrate Your Thermostat: Ensure your thermostat is calibrated correctly to avoid inaccurate readings, which can lead to your system working harder than necessary.

4. Know When to Repair or Replace

Even with regular maintenance, there comes a time when you need to decide whether to repair or replace your air conditioner. Consider these factors:

  • Age of the Unit: Most air conditioners last between 10 to 15 years. If your unit is nearing the end of its lifespan and requires frequent repairs, it may be more cost-effective to replace it with a newer, more efficient model.

  • Repair Costs: If the cost of repairs is more than 50% of the price of a new unit, replacement is usually the better option.

  • Energy Efficiency: Newer models are often more energy-efficient. Upgrading to a newer model can reduce your energy bills and improve your home's comfort.

5. Optimize Airflow and Insulation

Proper airflow and insulation are crucial for your air conditioner’s performance. Here’s how to optimize them:

  • Seal Leaks: Check for and seal any air leaks around doors, windows, and ductwork to prevent cool air from escaping and warm air from entering your home.

  • Insulate Your Home: Proper insulation in your walls, attic, and floors can reduce the load on your air conditioner, making it easier for your system to maintain a consistent temperature.

  • Clear Vents and Registers: Ensure that furniture, curtains, and other objects do not block vents and registers, allowing for proper airflow throughout your home.

6. Prepare for Off-Season Storage

If you live in an area with cold winters, you might not use your air conditioner for several months. Properly preparing your unit for off-season storage can prevent damage and ensure it’s ready to go when the warm weather returns:

  • Cover the Outdoor Unit: Protect the outdoor unit with a weatherproof cover to prevent debris, snow, and ice from accumulating on it.

  • Turn Off the Power: Turn off the power to the outdoor unit to prevent it from accidentally turning on during the winter.

  • Inspect the Unit in Spring: Before turning your air conditioner back on in the spring, inspect it for any damage and clean it thoroughly.

7. Energy-Saving Tips

As an air conditioner owner, saving energy should be a priority. Here are some simple tips to reduce your energy consumption:

  • Use Ceiling Fans: Ceiling fans can help circulate cool air, allowing you to raise the thermostat by a few degrees without sacrificing comfort.

  • Close Curtains and Blinds: Keep curtains and blinds closed during the hottest parts of the day to block out the sun’s heat.

  • Limit Heat-Generating Activities: Avoid using ovens, stoves, and other heat-generating appliances during the hottest parts of the day to reduce the load on your air conditioner.

Conclusion

Proper air conditioner home ownership is about more than just enjoying cool air; it’s about ensuring your unit runs efficiently, lasts longer, and helps you save money. By choosing the right system, maintaining it regularly, optimizing airflow, and adopting energy-saving habits, you can enjoy the benefits of your air conditioner for years to come.

Investing time and effort into these practices will not only enhance your comfort but also increase the longevity and efficiency of your air conditioning system. Stay cool and take care of your AC—it’s an essential part of your home’s comfort and value.

I had cold and hot spots all over my 70 yr old home. My furnace is quite new and Greg optimized the fan and furnace. The original installer just took it out of the box with factory settings and installed it- basically running at 50% of capacity. Greg also routed heat into my laundry room, yeah - so now I can renovate laundry room - thanks Greg. He is honest, professional and knowledgeable. I will be calling him back in the spring to optimize my AC as well.

by Happy Homeowner in Toronto on Twintech Heating and Cooling

Wonderful from beginning to end. I tend to fret and worry about home improvements but the excellent team at TwinTech put my mind as ease. They listen, they are patient and best of all ... the work they did is amazing! I chose the Goodman 80K BTU 2 stage furnace and the matching Goodman air conditioner. Greg, Grant and Poitr "Peter" arrived on time, took great care, explained everything to me and they answered all of my questions. They carefully adjusted the factory settings to optimize the furnace for my house and they also checked the duct work in the basement. Dave, the Sales Manager, came by to say "hello" and to see if I was happy. YES, I am happy with the work! The furnace is very quiet. I have it running on low just to circulate the air in the house and it's so much quieter than my old furnace. When I need new duct work for an upcoming basement renovation TwinTech will be my first choice. I highly recommend TwinTech. PS. They were even nice to my dogs.

Greg was prompt on the scheduled day of installation and the work was done well within the time estimated beforehand. Installation was neat and the equipment and scope of work was as specified in the quote. One item I must point out is that we were faced with a "No Heat" situation the day before the scheduled installation and Greg came out to address it free of charge. Not only that, but he also corrected an installation fault with our smart thermostat that was not part of the original job, again free of charge.

Greg came by to do a routine furnace checkup. He was very knowledgeable and professional, letting me know what's being checked/adjusted and giving me tips to ensure everything runs smooth. Very honest and upfront about what's working fine vs. what may need to be fixed/replaced. He didn't attempt to up sell anything that wasn't necessary. I'm glad to have finally found someone I can trust and rely on for all my HVAC needs - furnace, A/C, and hot water tank.

I'm very happy with the work that was done. Everyone from salesperson to the installers were friendly and professional. They were on time and cleaned up the job site after it was installed. They also answered all my follow up questions promptly. I wouldn't hesitate to work with them or recommend them again.

Greg and his brother were referred to us by a friend. They arrived when they said they would, did an exceptional job and left the place as tidy or tidier then they found it. Their professionalism is only surpassed by their kind and friendly demeanor. Even after several calls to help me with my high tech thermostat I feel that I could always call with any concern (No one responds to my texts as quickly as Greg) and have a friendly helpful response. I found out their grandfather started the company and now as a 3rd generation company, they are doing their grandfather proud. I would highly recommend Twintech over any other hvac company out there.
