What to Do When Your Furnace Unit Shuts Down
If your furnace unexpectedly shuts down, it can be stressful, especially in cold weather. Before calling for professional help, here are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:
Check the Thermostat
Ensure the thermostat is set to "heat" and the temperature is set above the room temperature. Sometimes, the settings can get changed accidentally, causing the furnace not to kick on.
Inspect the Power
Verify that the furnace is receiving power. Check the circuit breaker and reset it if necessary. If the furnace is connected to a switch, ensure it’s turned on.
Replace the Air Filter
A clogged air filter can cause your furnace to overheat and shut down. If the filter is dirty, replace it and see if that solves the issue.
Examine the Pilot Light or Ignition
For older furnaces, check whether the pilot light is on. If it’s off, you may need to relight it. Newer models may have an electronic ignition, which should be inspected by a professional.
Check the Furnace Door
Some furnaces won’t operate if the access door is not properly closed. Double-check that the door is securely shut.
Inspect the Vents
Blocked vents can disrupt airflow, causing the furnace to shut down. Make sure all vents are open and unblocked.
Examine the Flame Sensor
A dirty flame sensor can cause the furnace to shut off after lighting. If you're comfortable, you can clean it with a soft cloth, but calling a professional might be the best option.
Reset the Furnace
Some furnaces have a reset button, typically located near the blower. Press it and wait a few minutes for the system to reboot.
Call a Professional
If none of these steps solve the issue, it’s time to call an HVAC technician. They can diagnose and fix any deeper issues with the system.
Regular furnace maintenance can prevent sudden shutdowns, ensuring your unit operates efficiently throughout the winter months.
My old furnace had finally broken down for the last time when contacted twintech to have a new furnace installed They were prompt, knowledgeable and very reasonably priced. They did such a great job i tell all my friends and family about this company.
To whom it may concern, I recently had TwinTech (Greg and Grant Dainty) replace my furnace and service both my gas fireplaces and air conditioning unit. They were professional, courteous and very fair in their pricing. I would gladly recommend TwinTech to anyone needing work done. I can be contacted at 905-626-XXXX.
My Fiancé and I have relied on Twintech Heating and Cooling now for the better part of the last 10 years. In that time, Greg has installed a furnace, an air conditioner, and a heat-pump at our residence in Toronto. In each instance Greg and his team were a pleasure to deal with. They were courteous and professional throughout the whole process and the quality of their work is first rate. Our experiences have always been extremely positive and we have referred his services numerous times to our friends and family. Without hesitation, I would recommend Greg and TwinTech Heating and Cooling to anyone looking to service or replace their existing heat/AC equipment
