Furnace Stopped Working, Now What?

If your furnace has stopped working, don’t panic! There are a few common troubleshooting steps you can take before calling in a professional:
1. Check the Thermostat
Ensure that your thermostat is set to “heat” and that the temperature is set higher than the current room temperature. Sometimes, the thermostat is the issue rather than the furnace.
2. Inspect the Circuit Breaker
A tripped circuit breaker could be the cause. Go to your electrical panel and check if the furnace’s breaker has flipped. If it has, reset it.
3. Replace the Air Filter
A dirty air filter can restrict airflow, causing the furnace to overheat and shut down. Replace your filter to see if that resolves the issue.
4. Check the Pilot Light or Ignition System
If you have an older furnace, the pilot light may have gone out and will need to be relit. For newer models with electronic ignitions, you may need to reset the system.
5. Ensure Gas Supply
For gas furnaces, make sure the gas valve is turned on. If you suspect a gas issue, contact your gas provider or a professional immediately.
6. Examine Vents and Air Ducts
Make sure that vents and air ducts aren’t blocked, as restricted airflow can cause the furnace to stop working.
7. Look for Error Codes
Modern furnaces often display error codes if something is wrong. Check your owner’s manual to interpret these codes and understand what might be going on.
8. Call a Professional
If the furnace still doesn’t turn on after trying these steps, it’s time to call in an HVAC professional. A licensed technician can diagnose and fix more complex issues such as problems with the blower motor, heat exchanger, or wiring.

He worked on the furnace for about a hour not wanting to give up to fix the problem. The furnace was 17 years old. I was the one talking about replacing it. End result was the next day it was all done. On the Sunday Bob came over with heaters to warm up the house. We decided to replace the water heater at the same time. TwinTech is an excellent and honest company! I called them for a second opinion after being told by another company that I needed to replace my furnace. Turns out this was not the case at all! I did not need a new furnace. TwinTech did not push to make an unnecessary sale and saved me from a huge expense. Bob and Mitch were extremely professional and above all honest! I called Twin Tech when my air conditioning stopped working. Greg came over to diagnose the issue - the same day. He was able to diagnose the issue and resolve it quite quickly. Although it was a quick fix, Greg was very thorough in explaining the issue and provided great advice.
