Furnace thermostat issues can lead to inefficient heating and discomfort, especially as temperatures drop. If your furnace isn’t functioning properly, the thermostat could be a common culprit. Here are some common thermostat-related problems and how to address them:
1. Incorrect Thermostat Settings
- Problem: Sometimes, the thermostat is simply set incorrectly, either switched to "cool" instead of "heat" or with an incorrect temperature setting.
- Solution: Ensure the thermostat is on the “heat” setting and the temperature is higher than the current room temperature.
2. Thermostat Placement
- Problem: If your thermostat is placed near heat sources like sunlight or in a drafty location, it may cause inaccurate readings.
- Solution: Relocate the thermostat to a central location away from direct heat or cold sources for more accurate temperature control.
3. Wiring Problems
- Problem: Loose or damaged wiring can prevent the thermostat from communicating with your furnace.
- Solution: Check for frayed or disconnected wires behind the thermostat. If you’re not comfortable handling electrical components, contact a professional HVAC technician.
4. Dead Batteries
- Problem: If your thermostat is battery-operated, dead batteries can cause it to stop working.
- Solution: Replace the batteries and check if the thermostat resumes normal operation.
5. Thermostat Calibration

- Problem: If your furnace is short-cycling (turning on and off too quickly), it may indicate a thermostat problem or improper placement.
- Solution: Check the thermostat settings and location. If the problem persists, you may need a professional HVAC inspection.
8. Dirty Thermostat
- Problem: Dust and debris can accumulate inside the thermostat, causing mechanical or electrical malfunctions.
- Solution: Clean the inside of the thermostat gently using a soft brush or compressed air.
Addressing these common thermostat issues can help restore your furnace’s efficiency. If troubleshooting doesn’t solve the problem, it may be time to consult an HVAC technician.

The next day he came to the house to review my needs and give me a price for a new system. Price quoted was less than I expected and the installation was completed the following day.
