Should My Furnace Be Blowing Cold Air?

If your furnace is blowing cold air, it could indicate a problem that needs attention. Here are some common reasons and steps to troubleshoot:
1. Thermostat Settings
- Check the mode: Ensure the thermostat is set to "Heat" and not "Fan."
- Temperature setting: Confirm the temperature is set higher than the current room temperature.
2. Pilot Light or Ignition Issues
- In older furnaces, the pilot light may be out. Relight it following the manufacturer's instructions.
- For newer furnaces, a faulty electronic ignition system might be preventing the burners from lighting.
3. Clogged Air Filters
- Dirty filters can restrict airflow and cause the furnace to overheat, leading the safety mechanism to shut off the burners.
- Replace your filter if it’s clogged or dusty.
4. Overheating Furnace
- A furnace that overheats will trigger safety mechanisms, shutting down the heating elements while the blower continues to circulate air.
- Common causes include poor airflow or a malfunctioning blower motor.
5. Ductwork Problems
- Leaky or disconnected ducts can pull cold air into the system or fail to deliver warm air efficiently. Inspect your ducts for issues.
6. Empty Fuel Supply (Gas or Oil Furnaces)
- If your furnace relies on fuel, check the tank to ensure it's not empty.
7. Malfunctioning Components
- Issues with the blower motor, control board, or limit switch can cause cold air to blow.

I have known Greg and Grant Dainty for many years and have used their company for my house and business.
