My Furnace is Cycling Frequently

If your furnace is cycling on and off more frequently than usual (called short cycling), it’s usually a sign that something’s wrong. Let’s troubleshoot some common causes:

Dirty Air Filter
A clogged filter restricts airflow, causing the furnace to overheat and shut off quickly to prevent damage.
Fix: Check and replace your air filter if it looks dirty or hasn’t been replaced in the last 1-3 months.

Thermostat Issues
A malfunctioning thermostat, poor placement (like near a heat source), or incorrect settings can cause rapid cycling.
Fix: Ensure the thermostat is set to "Heat" and "Auto" (not "On"). If the thermostat is old, consider replacing it.

Flame Sensor is Dirty or Faulty
The flame sensor detects if the burners are lit. If it’s dirty or failing, the furnace may shut off too soon.
Fix: Turn off power, remove the flame sensor, and clean it gently with steel wool or a fine brush.

Overheating Furnace
If the furnace overheats, safety switches shut it down early. This could be from poor airflow, blocked vents, or mechanical issues.
Fix: Ensure all vents are open and unblocked. If the issue persists, a professional should inspect the system.

Oversized Furnace
If your furnace is too powerful for your home, it may heat rooms too fast and shut off repeatedly.
Fix: Unfortunately, this requires a more permanent solution — consulting an HVAC pro for resizing or adjustments.

Faulty Limit Switch or Blower Motor
A failing limit switch or blower motor may cause irregular cycling.
Fix: A professional diagnosis is best here — parts may need replacing.
If none of these fixes work, it’s worth calling an HVAC technician to prevent damage to your furnace or higher energy bills.

The next day he came to the house to review my needs and give me a price for a new system. Price quoted was less than I expected and the installation was completed the following day.
