When is it Time to Get a New Furnace?

It might be time to get a new furnace if you notice any of these signs:

Age of the Furnace: Most furnaces last around 15-20 years. If yours is approaching or past that range, it’s likely running inefficiently, even if it still works.

Rising Energy Bills: Older or failing furnaces have to work harder to produce the same heat, leading to higher utility bills.

Frequent Repairs: If you’re calling a technician more often — especially for expensive parts like the heat exchanger or control board — replacing the furnace might be more cost-effective than repairing it.

Uneven Heating: Are some rooms too hot or too cold? A struggling furnace may no longer distribute heat evenly.

Strange Noises: Banging, rattling, humming, or squealing sounds could signal worn-out parts or structural issues inside the unit.

Yellow or Flickering Flame: A healthy gas furnace should have a steady blue flame. A yellow or flickering flame could indicate a carbon monoxide leak — a serious safety hazard.

Poor Air Quality: If you’re noticing more dust, dry air, or allergy symptoms, your aging furnace might not be filtering or humidifying air effectively.

Short Cycling: If the furnace turns on and off too frequently, it may be overheating or struggling to maintain temperature, signaling the need for replacement.

Carbon Monoxide Detector Alerts: If your carbon monoxide detector goes off, shut off the furnace immediately and call a professional. A cracked heat exchanger could be the culprit — and that often means it’s time for a new furnace.
