How to Inspect your Duct System
Furnaces and air conditioners are the source for all the comfort your HVAC system provides but none of that warm or cool air goes where it’s supposed to without your duct system. Making sure that system is running properly is an important part of keeping your home energy efficient and not causing any issues with your health. While professional expertise is always welcome there are a few things you can do to assess your ducts.
Take a Deep Look
Keep an eye on your vents when your system turns on – if dust or other debris gets blown out you may have issues deeper in the ductwork that may need to be cleaned out. To be sure take a look with a flashlight to see if there’s any buildup. While you’re looking check for evidence of moisture or mold or any droppings that might be due to rodents or other pests. If you notice these issues you should contact a qualified duct cleaning service.
Find Leaks
Twenty to thirty percent of conditioned air gets lost before it reaches the end point through leaks in the system. Do a visual inspection of your ductwork to look for obvious holes and run your hand around duct connections to see if you can feel any air escaping from the system. You can use duct tape to seal off any holes or loose connections.
When in Doubt, Call a Pro
Through your inspections you may find a tangle or badly arranged ducts in your system. Do not attempt to fix them yourself but call in professionals who are familiar with that kind of work. Also, even after making some fixes yourself or even getting your ductwork cleaned you may have utility bills that are too high, or rooms that never seem comfortable or are difficult to heat or cool. In cases like that you’ll also need to call in an expert so they can assess your entire HVAC system. The problem may require a rerouting or professional sealing of your duct system in order to fix the issue and prevent it from occurring in the future.
