Why Heat Pumps Are So Efficient
With energy prices on the rise and environmental awareness growing, more homeowners are turning to energy-efficient HVAC solutions.
One standout option is the heat pump—a system that offers both heating and cooling with surprising efficiency.
At Twintech Heating & Cooling, we’re often asked: Why are heat pumps so efficient? The answer lies in how they work and the modern technology behind them.
The Science of Heat Transfer
Unlike traditional furnaces that burn fuel to create heat, heat pumps use electricity to move heat from one place to another.
In the winter, they extract heat from the outside air and transfer it indoors.
In the summer, they reverse the process to cool your home by moving heat outside.
This heat transfer process uses significantly less energy because it doesn’t involve generating heat—just moving it.
That’s what makes heat pumps more efficient than combustion-based systems.
Energy Efficiency Ratios (EER and COP)
Heat pumps boast high Energy Efficiency Ratios (EER) and Coefficients of Performance (COP), which measure how effectively they convert energy into heating or cooling.
For example, a heat pump with a COP of 3 means it produces three units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed.
That’s up to 300% efficiency—far greater than the 90-98% you might see with high-efficiency gas furnaces.
Year-Round Performance
Another reason heat pumps are so efficient is their ability to work year-round.
A single system provides both heating and cooling, reducing the need for multiple HVAC units.
Today’s cold climate heat pumps are even designed to operate efficiently in freezing temperatures, making them a practical solution for Canadian winters and hot summers alike.
Cost Savings Over Time
While the initial investment in a heat pump may be slightly higher, the long-term energy savings often outweigh the upfront cost.
At Twintech Heating & Cooling, we’ve seen our customers save hundreds of dollars annually on utility bills after switching to a heat pump system.
Environmentally Friendly Comfort
Heat pumps also contribute to a greener planet.
They rely on electricity instead of burning fossil fuels, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
When paired with renewable energy sources like solar panels, the environmental benefits are even greater.

We are very happy to recommend this company to everyone. Our furnace broke down on Sunday morning. We phoned them and before noon Grant the owner showed up. He worked on the furnace for about a hour not wanting to give up to fix the problem. The furnace was 17 years old. I was the one talking about replacing it. End result was the next day it was all done. On the Sunday Bob came over with heaters to warm up the house. We decided to replace the water heater at the same time. Thanks Grant for the excellent work. Thumbs up.
Right on time. Explained how to work the HRV in a different way so the house would not be so dry. Changed my whole house water filter for me as well. Friendly, helpful, caring service!
Very pleased with the professional service that TwinTech Heating and Cooling provided in replacing my furnace. I got several quotes from different service providers. Their price was excellent and they explained the features very well. We are very glad we went with TwinTech and highly recommend their services.

TwinTech is an excellent and honest company! I called them for a second opinion after being told by another company that I needed to replace my furnace. Turns out this was not the case at all! I did not need a new furnace. TwinTech did not push to make an unnecessary sale and saved me from a huge expense. Bob and Mitch were extremely professional and above all honest! I definitely recommend TwinTech!
My AC stopped blowing cold air. The unit outside seems to be working. The fan is spinning but no cold air comes out. I'm calling someone to come take a look at it today but was curious if anyone knew what it could be and give me a heads
