Maintaining Your AC During Colder Months
The cooler weather will be setting in to stay and so, indoor air conditioners will finally get some time off. Residential owners, however, should not neglect their AC units. HVAC systems can last from 12-15 years, given proper maintenance. If you do not prepare your AC units for winter, they might not be able to live out their full lives.
Here are some things you have to do in order to preserve your air conditioner this winter:
Change your filters.
You should change your filters at least once every three months. Just because you won’t be using your AC unit doesn’t mean you should stop tending its AC filters. Keep in mind that dirty filters block the air flow through your system. They spread dust, dirt and allergens throughout your home. Replacing a clogged filter can also make your AC unit more energy efficient. If you maintain this HVAC system repair habit over the winter months will save you energy and even money.
Clear your units of dirt and debris.
For an outdoor condenser, it is crucial to keep it clear of any debris. This is important especially as leaves start to fall. Make sure that your unit is cleared of any leaves and other debris before snow starts to fall. If there are any overhanging branches or foliage at least two feet from your unit, those should be trimmed to keep airflow circulating. By doing so, you also prevent anything from falling on your unit should a winter storm occur.
Pay attention to your AC coils and coil fins.
AC coils tend to attract dirt over time – no matter how clean your filters are. What happens when dirt builds up on coils? The airflow is reduced and the coil is now less capable of absorbing heat. Coils should be checked or cleaned once a year to keep it working in optimum condition. The fins on the coils as well as the condenser should be also be checked regularly. You should also check if they are bent and have that repaired immediately because if they are bent, they can keep air from flowing.
Protect your AC units.
When it becomes cool enough to do without your AC unit, remove portable AC units, if you have any. It is important to keep these portable units in a safe and dry place. Again, your units should be cleared of any debris from your outdoor central air unit. Do not forget to place a cover over your portable units to keep them safe from various elements.

My Fiancé and I have relied on Twintech Heating and Cooling now for the better part of the last 10 years. In that time, Greg has installed a furnace, an air conditioner, and a heat-pump at our residence in Toronto. In each instance Greg and his team were a pleasure to deal with. They were courteous and professional throughout the whole process and the quality of their work is first rate. Our experiences have always been extremely positive and we have referred his services numerous times to our friends and family. Without hesitation, I would recommend Greg and TwinTech Heating and Cooling to anyone looking to service or replace their existing heat/AC equipment
