Everything You Need to Know About Furnace Filters

Furnace filters are an integral component of an HVAC system. There are a variety of sizes and options available when talking about filters, and it is no wonder that most homeowners have so many questions about furnace filters! In this article, we will help you understand furnace filters more – how they function and how you can choose the best one for your HVAC system and your home!

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FURNACE FILTERS?

Furnace filters can either be disposable or reusable. Disposable models are the one that is simply pulled off from the unit and just replace them with new, clean ones as needed. Reusable or washable filters, on the other hand, can be removed from the filter cabinet, cleaned accordingly, thoroughly dried, and reinserted in the filter cabinet for continuous provision of quality air to your home. Disposable furnace filter options are as follows:

*Fiberglass filters
*Polyester filters
*Synthetic media filters
*Electrostatic filters
*High-Efficiency Particulate Arrestance (HEPA) filters
*Pleated media filters

MERV - What does this mean?
Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) is the rating system used to express the efficiency of furnace filters. MERV ratings range from 1 to 16, and when reading it, you have to remember: the higher the MERV rating, the more efficient the filter is at capturing contaminants of different sizes.

Filters that are rated MERV 8 through MERV 12 are known for offering excellent air filtration for residential properties. While you might think that it is best to purchase the highest MERV-rated filter, using such filters can actually restrict airflow through your HVAC system. This can cause comfort issues, system breakdowns, and increased energy consumption.

HOW LONG DO FURNACE FILTERS LAST?
The service life of furnace filters can vary depending on different factors. The efficiency rating of a filter greatly affects its lifespan. For instance, filters with higher MERV ratings can typically last longer than lower-rated, low-efficiency furnace filters.

There are also factors concerning your household that can impact a furnace filter’s service life. For instances, homes that have pets or smokers have more airborne contaminants. The filters in such homes need to be changed more frequently as their filters can also become clogged faster because of the presence of more contaminants. If there are people who are suffering from asthma or allergies in your home, then you should also frequently change the filters to help reduce airborne triggers inside the home and thus, lessen the symptoms they are suffering from.

My old water heater quit on me. I called TwinTech. In less than 4 days, I had my new water heater installed and the old one taken away. The whole process was quick, easy, pleasant, and well done. This is the third time I've dealt with TwinTech and I've been satisfied each time.

I needed a new furnace and A/C to replace my 21 yr. old units, and went to the internet to view potential companies in May, I received 3 quotes,
and chose Twintech based on their salesman Dave who was very detailed and covered off everything on what Twintech was all about,
an extremely dedicated company with so many years of experience, and after reading the on line reviews I was sold on Twintech, who did not disappoint as the installation team were top notch with Greg leading,

We are very happy to recommend this company to everyone. Our furnace broke down on Sunday morning. We phoned them and before noon Grant the owner showed up. He worked on the furnace for about a hour not wanting to give up to fix the problem. The furnace was 17 years old. I was the one talking about replacing it. End result was the next day it was all done. On the Sunday Bob came over with heaters to warm up the house. We decided to replace the water heater at the same time. Thanks Grant for the excellent work. Thumbs up.

by Linda on Twintech Heating and Cooling

Right on time. Explained how to work the HRV in a different way so the house would not be so dry. Changed my whole house water filter for me as well. Friendly, helpful, caring service!

by Robert Rogers on Twintech Heating and Cooling

by Ruth on Twintech Heating and Cooling

TwinTech is an excellent and honest company! I called them for a second opinion after being told by another company that I needed to replace my furnace. Turns out this was not the case at all! I did not need a new furnace. TwinTech did not push to make an unnecessary sale and saved me from a huge expense. Bob and Mitch were extremely professional and above all honest! I definitely recommend TwinTech!
