Furnace is Turning Rapidly On and Off

When your furnace is turning on and off rapidly, a situation known as short cycling, it can cause inefficiencies, higher energy bills, and wear on your system. Several factors might be causing this issue, including:
1. Dirty Air Filter
- A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing the furnace to overheat and shut down as a safety precaution. The furnace will attempt to restart, repeating the cycle.
- Solution: Replace or clean the air filter regularly (every 1-3 months depending on usage).
2. Thermostat Issues
- A malfunctioning thermostat or poor placement (e.g., near heat sources or drafts) can cause inaccurate temperature readings, leading to frequent cycling.
- Solution: Ensure the thermostat is functioning correctly and is located in an optimal spot away from direct sunlight, vents, or drafts. Replace the thermostat if necessary.
3. Oversized Furnace
- An oversized furnace heats the space too quickly, causing it to cycle off prematurely. This can lead to uneven heating and energy inefficiency.
- Solution: Consult a professional HVAC technician to evaluate your furnace size. If it's oversized, replacing it with a properly sized unit may be necessary.
4. Blocked or Closed Vents
- Obstructed or closed vents can disrupt airflow, causing the furnace to overheat and cycle off.
- Solution: Ensure all vents are open and free of obstructions like furniture, rugs, or curtains.
5. Faulty Flame Sensor
- The flame sensor detects whether the furnace is burning fuel. If it’s dirty or malfunctioning, the furnace might shut off prematurely.

6. Blower Motor Problems
- A malfunctioning blower motor may fail to distribute air properly, causing overheating and short cycling.

7. High Limit Switch Malfunction
- The high limit switch shuts off the furnace if it overheats. If this switch is faulty or constantly tripped, it can cause short cycling.

8. Improperly Set Furnace
- If your furnace is running on too high a setting for the size of your space, it can cause rapid cycling.

He worked on the furnace for about a hour not wanting to give up to fix the problem. The furnace was 17 years old. I was the one talking about replacing it. TwinTech is an excellent and honest company! I called them for a second opinion after being told by another company that I needed to replace my furnace. Turns out this was not the case at all! I did not need a new furnace. TwinTech did not push to make an unnecessary sale and saved me from a huge expense. Bob and Mitch were extremely professional and above all honest! I called Twin Tech when my air conditioning stopped working. Greg came over to diagnose the issue - the same day. He was able to diagnose the issue and resolve it quite quickly. Although it was a quick fix, Greg was very thorough in explaining the issue and provided great advice.
