My Furnace Suddenly Stopped Working

If your furnace suddenly stopped working, here are some steps to troubleshoot the issue before calling a professional:
1. Check the Thermostat
- Ensure it’s set to "Heat" mode.
- Increase the temperature a few degrees to see if the furnace kicks on.
- Replace the thermostat batteries if it runs on them.
2. Inspect the Power Supply
- Check if the furnace switch (typically on the side of the unit) is turned on.
- Make sure the circuit breaker hasn’t tripped; reset it if necessary.
3. Examine the Air Filter
- A clogged air filter can cause overheating and shut down the furnace. Replace a dirty filter and try restarting the system.
4. Check the Pilot Light (for Gas Furnaces)
- If you have an older gas furnace, the pilot light may have gone out and needs to be relit.
- If you smell gas, turn off the furnace immediately and contact a professional.
5. Inspect the Furnace Door
- Many furnaces have a safety switch that prevents operation if the access panel is not securely closed.
6. Look at the Condensate Drain (for High-Efficiency Furnaces)
- If the drain line is clogged, the furnace may shut down. Try clearing it out.
7. Reset the Furnace
- Turn off the furnace at the breaker, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
If these steps don’t resolve the issue, it may require professional service.
