AC Intentionally Turning Off Intermittently

How bad is it to turn the AC off on nice days (high 60s) instead of continuing to run? I usually plan to keep it off for days at a time, not frequently turning it on and off (I know that draws a lot of power and wear).

Every answer I find about this have more to do with turning off on vacation, etc.

Question from user ClosdforBusiness at AirConditioners at reddit.

Answer:

All air conditioning units cycle on and off probably 100 times a day.

Only undersized units would run constantly.

Read my other comment first, you don't really need all this info.

—-assuming your taking about a whole home central air unit, not a window air conditioner.

The fan isn't the same as the AC, the fan can run to circulate air without the cooling part running.

Turning it off is no different than having a cool day when it doesn't need to run.

If you cook something in your oven or boil water on the stove for a long time, or even use an air fryer (they're basically space heaters) all those things will cause your AC to run extra.

It's 10000% fine to not use it some days, as long as your not turning it off by blocking vents or doing something crazy like disconnecting the coolant lines.

Turning it on and off isn't bad for it, that's how it's designed to work.

Google “duty cycle” for info on this, usually they run for say 10 mins, off for 10, back on for 5, off for 10, etc as needed to cool the place to the temp you set it to.

If it ran 24 - 7 it would ice up and stop working.

I'm not sure why you'd think turning it off would cause it to use more power.

That's not a thing that happens.

It seems you believed the white lies your dad or similar thermostat controlling person told you as a kid.

Not running something won't cause it to use more power, by definition it being off means it's not using any power and it's very rare for something to require so much start up power that it's worth leaving on.

Yes motors do have a power peak when first spinning up a motor, but that's like a 0.

1 second peak.

Running it for even 1 minute uses more power.

I had a really great experience with these guys. The salesman Bob was clearly very knowledgeable about everything to do with heating and cooling a home, spent a lot of time with us going over the details of the job, never rushed us and came back after the install to make sure we were happy. The installation crew was excellent, they covered the floors all the way from outside down to the basement furnace room, kept the place clean, got the work done on time and we’re very friendly. I’ve got 15 years in the contracting/ construction industry and these guys are one of the most professional company’s I’ve dealt with. Great company!

Had great service and clean-up was good. Was happy with my salesman. They were very friendly and helpful. I needed a new furnace as our was over 20 years old. The furnace and air-conditioner work great and they are very quiet. I am very pleased with the service and product I received.

Reviews for Twintech were good, and they did not disappoint. After an initial visit to discuss the suitable AC unit for replacement, an installation date was available in just a couple of days, and everything was installed without a hitch. Highly recommended

My old water heater quit on me. I called TwinTech. In less than 4 days, I had my new water heater installed and the old one taken away. The whole process was quick, easy, pleasant, and well done. This is the third time I've dealt with TwinTech and I've been satisfied each time.

I had them replace my furnace last year. When it came time for the air conditioner this year, I did not hesitate to call Twintech again. I will also have them perform regular maintenance on them.

We required a new HVAC replacement after running the old
system for 18 years.
Dave understood our requirements and gave us a quote that
covered all the necessary items.
Installation was fast and very tidy. Everything works as
it should. Our thanks to Greg, Mitch and others for their
excellent work. Recommend this family owned business to
anyone else, considering HVAC or other work.

I needed a new furnace and A/C to replace my 21 yr. old units, and went to the internet to view potential companies in May, I received 3 quotes,
and chose Twintech based on their salesman Dave who was very detailed and covered off everything on what Twintech was all about,
an extremely dedicated company with so many years of experience, and after reading the on line reviews I was sold on Twintech, who did not disappoint as the installation team were top notch with Greg leading,
I would highly recommend this company without any doubts, in my books they are first class all the way. Our new Amana furnace and A/C are working perfectly !
